Re:Fresh 36 - Top Secret Eyes Only

This week on the show: Mitt Romney picks a running mate, we’ll talk about a public school who has a policy to force girls to take pregnancy tests under threat of being kicked out, and beverage companies are helping massive efforts to conserve water…but why? We’ll also talk about what NASA has been up to, we’ll take a look at video of the raid on Kim Dotcom founder of Megaupload, and Demonoid got the axe this week but Anonymous has a plan. Joe and Nate share their thoughts on going to the Under The Influence of Music Tour and we’ll have a nice deep conversation about Neon Genesis Evangelion with our special guest Coop. It’s big one.

As CISPA Hits Congress, Cybersecurity Company Hypes The Fear Of Anonymous

Through TNW, we learn of a survey published by threat protection company Bit9 that states an attack by Anonymous is the number one thing IT security professionals fear. Doubtless the release of this survey was timed to coincide with CISPA, the dangerous cybersecurity bill that is being debated in the House this week. It’s no surprise that a security provider would want to play up the fear of cyber attack, but I’m reminded of a quote from comedian Dara O’Briain: “Zombies are at an all time low level, but the fear of zombies could be incredibly high. It doesn’t mean we have to have government policies to deal with the fear of zombies.”

European Parliament Rapporteur Recommends Rejection of ACTA

The controversial international anti-piracy agreement known as ACTA may soon be put to a bitter end in Europe. The European Parliament member responsible for monitoring the treaty’s progress through the European Union is saying publicly that it should be soundly rejected.

British MEP David Martin, the Rapporteur for ACTA, announced that he will recommend that the treaty be rejected. He issued his conclusion in a report to the International Trade Committee, the main body involved in the ACTA debate. He will submit a final draft of his recommendation later this month, but an early draft can be found here (PDF).

CISPA Isn’t SOPA, but it is Vague and Scary

CISPA (the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act) is something that opponents of SOPA, PIPA, and ACTA should be paying attention to. While the goal of the bill purports to be about “cybersecurity,” the bill contains vague language that allows companies to spy on Internet users and collect and share this data with third-party companies or Government agencies. The loophole for companies is that they can simply say that violating users’ privacy rights were necessary to protect against cybersecurity threats, to gain immunity from civil and criminal liabilities.

Legal experts have warned that the next phase of anti-copyright bills is to use important issues as cover. While CISPA is not anything like SOPA or other bills hated by most everyone on the Internet, it does seem to directly target individual Internet subscribers who might also be copyright infringers.

Last July, Comcast, Cablevision, Verizon, Time Warner Cable and other bandwidth providers announced that they had agreed to adopt policies designed to discourage customers from illegally downloading music, movies and software. Since then, the ISPs have been very quiet about their antipiracy measures.

While ACTA will be debated in the European Parliament in June, it looks like leaders throughout Europe are slowing down the process to ratify it. While 22 EU member states signed the agreement in Japan, Europe has its fair share of hold-outs. Germany said on Friday that it would hold off on backing the agreement until further discussion on it happens. Polish prime minister Donald Tusk also said that his country would wait for “sufficient consultation” before ratifying it. Earlier this month, Slovenia’s ambassador to Japan, Helena Drnovsek Zorko, apologized for what she called her “carelessness” in signing the treaty on behalf of her country in Japan.

Way to go Europe! Keep resisting internet censorship laws!!

SOCA agents stress that they have “monitored responses” to the arrest and takedown, including watching people discuss it globally on Twitter. They claim that related sites have already cleaned up their act to avoid similar action.

Hey! Hey! SOCA! Fuck you! Hope you read that.

But the biggest problem with ACTA is that there is very little known about it because most of the meetings held by countries has been kept secret on purpose. Once again the entertainment industry has managed to convince governments led by the United States - into pushing for laws and practices that do more to curtail privacy than they do to fight piracy.

Educate yourself (as well as possible) about ACTA and its effects.

And what do you know…

Might as well get in trouble for “sharing” this video. Oops.

If you’re too lazy to watch the video, then I will just say that ACTA is like SOPA+PIPA for the world. And it has already been signed in the US. It is going through the European countries right now, if I recall right.

ACTA. Know the facts.

And, as we know, the bill has recently been pulled. But looming on the horizon is ACTA…
