Microsoft Brings $99 Xbox-Kinect Bundle to Best Buy, GameStop

Microsoft is extending a deal for steeply discounted Xbox 360 consoles and Kinect motion controllers to Best Buy and GameStop stores in the United States, the company said this week.

In early May, the software giant began offering an Xbox 360 and Kinect bundle for $99 on its own online store and at Microsoft Stores to purchasers who also signed up for a two-year Xbox Live Gold Membership.

That same deal will be extended later this month at all Best Buy outlets in the U.S. and select GameStop stores, the company said.

“We’re excited to announce the expansion of this program, a new retail model that provides yet another way for consumers to get the complete Xbox 360, Kinect, and Xbox Live experience,” a Microsoft spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

Halo 4 hitting Xbox 360 on November 6—without Bungie

Microsoft and developer 343 Industries have announced that the next title in the Halo series will launch on the Xbox 360 on November 6.

The worldwide launch date, the same day as the US presidential election, places the game after planned September and October releases for anticipated holiday titles like Borderlands 2, Bioshock Infinite, Assassin’s Creed 3, and Medal of Honor: Warfighter, but still well ahead of the post-Thanksgiving sales period.

The new game, which Microsoft has called the beginning of a “new trilogy” for the franchise, is set four years after the events of Halo 3, which seems appropriate for a game coming out almost exactly four years after the last numbered Halo game.

“Comcast tries to justify preferred treatment for its own video on the Xbox 360 by claiming that the content is delivered over a private IP network rather than the public Internet,” complained consumer group Free Press. “But not counting this video against a Comcast customer’s monthly data limit gives the Comcast product an unfair advantage against other Internet video services. Unfortunately, such anti-competitive tricks may be allowed by loopholes in the FCC’s Open Internet rules, proving once again that the FCC failed to deliver on the promise of real Net Neutrality.”

The total hours spent on Xbox Live have increased 30 percent year over year, Microsoft said, growing to an incredible 84 hours a month average for Xbox Live Gold members (that average stood at 60 hours last June). Most of that growth came from increased use of entertainment apps such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, ESPN and Zune Marketplace on Xbox Live, which Microsoft says saw more than double the usage over the last year. With today’s release of new entertainment apps including Comcast, HBO Go and MLB.tv, that rate of increase seems likely to continue.

This morning Eurogamer ran a report on a number of users complaining that their Xbox 360 Achievements and Gamerscores were mysteriously being wiped. As you can imagine users were emailing them and other outlets franticly detailing their losses and how they had contacted Xbox Live support.

If you’ve been holding off on buying some of that Deus Ex or Just Cause 2 DLC on XBLA, you might like to know that for the next week (almost) all of Square Enix’s content will be up to 50% off. This includes Just Cause 2 and Battlestations: Pacific at $22.49 (down from $29.99), Deus Ex Human Revolution’s “Missing Link” DLC at 600msp, and Tomb Raider: Underworld at $14.99.
