New hacktivist sect emerges from Anonymous

MalSec has announced its intentions to fight internet censorship, but promises to keep innocent people safe this time

THE dust has barely settled on the recent revelation that the FBI had infiltrated deep into hacktivist collective Anonymous and turned Sabu, one of its most notorious figures, into an informer. Now the group is reorganising and has come out fighting with a different look and a more ethical attitude. Already, a new sub-sect has emerged called Malicious Security, and this time, MalSec says, it is going “for the win” without causing collateral damage.

Anonymous has always described itself as a “leaderless, decentralised organisation”, but it appeared to be precisely the opposite in 2011 when a few outspoken and highly skilled hackers with a flair for the dramatic captured the public’s attention. They became de facto mouthpieces for the group, creating and collapsing hacking operations with a single tweet. Since those hackers have been arrested, Anonymous has undergone a total makeover. Now it’s going back to its roots.

“I don’t think Anonymous will go down that cult of personality route again,” says one veteran Anon. The collective is returning to its original concept of loosely associated individuals that temporarily unite for a common cause and disband the moment the mission is complete, making them difficult to pin down and even tougher to identify. “We’ve learned an important lesson,” he says.

As CISPA Hits Congress, Cybersecurity Company Hypes The Fear Of Anonymous

Through TNW, we learn of a survey published by threat protection company Bit9 that states an attack by Anonymous is the number one thing IT security professionals fear. Doubtless the release of this survey was timed to coincide with CISPA, the dangerous cybersecurity bill that is being debated in the House this week. It’s no surprise that a security provider would want to play up the fear of cyber attack, but I’m reminded of a quote from comedian Dara O’Briain: “Zombies are at an all time low level, but the fear of zombies could be incredibly high. It doesn’t mean we have to have government policies to deal with the fear of zombies.”

Hello Citizens of the World! We are Anonymous.

Many of you know that April 20th is a day marked by the consumption of Marijuana by people of all walks of life, all over the globe. What you may not know is the facts when it comes to Cannabis use.

It is common knowledge that this substance is significantly less harmful than alcohol or nicotine, two drugs widely deemed acceptable by society. (http://yfrog.com/nvjrgg)

Regardless of this, the U.S. Government even goes so far to claim that Cannabis has “no accepted medical value”, while many studies show that it impedes/prevents the growth of Cancer cells in humans. (http://yfrog.com/h6vtmttj)

According to them, Cocaine is a less dangerous drug than Cannabis. (http://yfrog.com/mmsoridj)

Aside from depriving the proletariat from the benefits of Cannabis, the laws currently in place promote organized crime + the black market, much like the Prohibition of Alcohol in the 1920s (http://yfrog.com/gz6nzktj)

This plant’s illegality has resulted in a huge increase in the incarceration rate due to the influx of innocent weedsmokers being put behind bars. (http://yfrog.com/oc5xqsvj)

Of course, the private prison industry isn’t the only entity profiting off the Prohibition of Pot. Many pharmaceutical companies would be left without customers if citizens were allowed to cultivate their own cannabis plants. (http://yfrog.com/od5noigj)

For the aforementioned reasons and more, #Anonymous calls for the cooperation of the American Occupation in the fight for legalization legislation. In solidarity with the overall interests of 99%, we ask that each chapter of #Occupy highlight the Marijuana Issue on the day of April 20th, 2012.

Together, we will give them a 4/20 they will never forget!

WE ARE ANONYMOUS.
WE ARE LEGION for legalization!
WE DO NOT FORGIVE the crimes of the War on Drugs.
WE DO NOT FORGET our brothers + sisters locked up because of it.
EXPECT US.

Anonymous hacks hundreds of Chinese government sites

The hacktivist group Anonymous now has a Chinese branch. An Anonymous China Twitter account was created late last month, was endorsed by the YourAnonNews Twitter account, which by the way has over 562,000 followers now, and the individuals behind it went to work. Boy have they been busy. Hundreds of Chinese government, company, and other general websites have been hacked and defaced in the span of a few days. A couple have also had their administrator accounts, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses posted publicly. On the hacked sites, the group even posted tips for how to circumvent the Great Firewall of China.

Mr. Wilder builds communications systems based around Freedom Towers, DIY kits that fit in a suitcase containing everything one would need to set up an ad hoc peer to peer network. The instructions are simple: “Plug it in. Press the big green button.” It creates a local network that stays up no matter what happens to the wider global Internet. All of this is mostly funded through private donations from family, friends, and fellow revolutionaries. Mr. Wilder estimates that the equipment required to assemble a Freedom Tower would have cost over $10,000 as recent as five years ago. Today: $2,000. And it’s completely grid-independent. That means solar powered batteries, a DC power system, a server, a router and a suite of powerful software, all contained in a suitcase.

3 notes

A new message posted on Pastebin and attributed to the hacking group Anonymous promises to shut down the entire internet on March 31. The group says that it will target the 13 root DNS servers that make up the bulk of the servers that give URL names to most of the Internet.

Yeah…or not.

The attack was announced by Twitter account @AnonymousIRC to its 276,783 followers. IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is one of the several online social platforms that Anonymous uses to congregate and make plans, along with Facebook and Twitter. The first tweet, sent out at around 10 am EST read, “http://www.betheloic.org HACKED Reason:religious idiocy and foh dah lulz #Anonymous#AntiSec#OWS#ROOTED#DAWKINS.”
