For decades now, large parts of the game industry have been striving to create games that are more meaningful—games that can speak to the human condition and tell an impactful story that’s deeper than “remember when I shot that guy?” At a DICE Summit presentation today, Twisted Metal designer David Jaffe made an impassioned argument that such efforts have been misguided, and a huge waste of the industry’s time and resources.

We’re having a very productive discussion about this on Re:Fresh

If you’ve been holding off on buying some of that Deus Ex or Just Cause 2 DLC on XBLA, you might like to know that for the next week (almost) all of Square Enix’s content will be up to 50% off. This includes Just Cause 2 and Battlestations: Pacific at $22.49 (down from $29.99), Deus Ex Human Revolution’s “Missing Link” DLC at 600msp, and Tomb Raider: Underworld at $14.99.

Double Fine’s Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert have proven that using crowd-sourced funding can be successful. Last night the company launched a Kickstarter page asking the community for $400,000 to create a new point-and-click adventure title. Around $300,000 of that will go towards development, while $100,000 of the money will be spent to create a “making of” documentary series about the game by 2 Player Productions.

The name of the game translates to Disability Girls, though that’s inaccurate—the word katawa in this context is an unprintable epithet for the disabled, connoting worthlessness.

Re:Fresh 13 - The Number Thirteen

Our 13th episode which was recorded on Friday Jan 13th 2012. On the show: Ubisoft apes Occupy by making them the antagonist in the new Rainbow Six game, Rick Santorum’s racist comment about “not wanting to give black people money”, weed doesn’t impair lung function, and the author of SOPA is a copyright violator. Shocking. C’mon honey boo-boo child, you know you wanna listen.
